Our lodgings were located in Shinjuku area, we were to stay there 2 days starting may 14th. So it be that our first days in Tōkyō were dedicated to shopping or just marvelling at the displays in many of the exccentric boutiques so typical of my favorite district. I was very eager to visit the second-hand lolita shops (since the ones selling the new stuff had by then nothing more in store for me, with the winter collections long gone). However my best find was after I found myself into the premises of a temple, stepping into a mini flea market with a wonderfully purveyed kimono booth. I managed to only buy one, a silk mauve one, so pretty.

Onsen

Following a recommandation by François, we had booked a room in an onsen somewhere in the Nikkō area. And fitting with his description, it was not easy task to get there. Eventually we stepped out of the train in the very station where most tourists change train for Nikkō, to find out we shouldn't have. And upon ultimately arriving a few hours later in the village in an incredible little station under the mountain, one had to wonder how to ever reach the final destination, since it was at no walkable distance — and what with the hourly bus gone not ten minutes before the train's arrival… Luckily someone from the staff picked us and we even saw a monkey on the ride. Finally where we were meant to be, the charm operated instantly: the bridge over the geothermal river, the diner of our lives, Spirited Away soundtrack barely audible (also seen in the onsen shop: dried newt just like in the movie).

The next day, we woke up very early in the hope of being as alone as could be in the public baths, and lo and behold, we succeeded! One of the baths was enclosed in the building, but another one had a nice view on the outside, so we picked it and enjoyed the contrast with fresh and rainy weather, and the view on the river below.

The expedition for this onsen proved an excellent occasion to visit the town of Nikkō on our way back, with a mere train switch. However Nikkō itself wasn't as quiet as our morning bath: it was crowded. We ended up strolling amongst the streets, unable to attend the customarily visits to the temples. By-and-by, Nikkō is the town in which the worthy tourist (not us) can gaze upon the famous trio of the Wise monkeys in the Tōshōgū sanctuary.
