Relating my travel adventures here has been a sort of tradition, but admittedly I usually do it as the family's archivist, either in term of photos or diary logs, so that trip to the Reunion Island I want to tell you about is going to be a little bit special indeed. While it was a family trip all right, it wasn't my own, and while I was saved some expenses, my repaying the 1100€ (!) plane ticket is still underway ; and finally for the first time in a decade I was gone for a full month. That being said, as some days were more picturesque than others, you might be safe from neverending instalments of my report. Not so much from latin plant names as I'm perusing my naturalist book about Reunion.

Despite the ludicrous price of my flight, it still was as much of a crappy experience as all those before since the missed one from Greece 2015. The company made a change to the schedule which didn't agree much with Marseille airport notorious delays. It was so close to a complete disaster that half of the passengers that were to take the same connecting flight didn't make it. It appears that the crew took opposite decisions after they alphabetically split us up. One half, of which I was, could board the plane that we had been told “couldn't suffer any delay”, while the other were booked on the next plane. Our own party was separated actually.

We arrived with the rising sun and waited until we were finally all reunited, luggages included, to get in the cars and drive to the Tampon, a town the other side of the island. While I did snap pictures on the first days, first beaches, first pier, a month stay means I can be picky as to which pictures I should display here so let's fast-forward to october 4th, although not without a pang of regret as to having a discharged Nikon the day before when visiting the former house of my party, which had been abandoned after they left. Very urbex.

Cap Ut

C'est mal me connaître.

On the 4th of october, too bad, I was ill. I woke up the day before with the harsh voice of a dude (call me Gérard, bro), but the new dawn apparently brought up fever and fatigue. Would it deter me from enjoying my vanilla duck and scouring the lava field with all my photographic gear? Uh, NO.

Holiday mode is still on as I'm editing my pictures in hope that this time it will be done in less than 150 years, same with accounting (fun times on excel!). I'm thinking about dropping downtown to seek my next herbarium main subject, maybe next week. Anyway, back before I flew to Peru I had a hole in my planning, a few days to fill in with a short illustration, so I grabbed my textured paper that I'm still not accustomed to work on, some paint as well — including my dried tea-filled half pan for all things brown — and here is the result, absolutely classical in every sense of the word. Because, first, it's a full-length portrait, the grey hair color is messalynian to the core (back from the days I used only pencils), the theme was developped from a previous illustration (Moth, of course). I had hoped to paint the dried flowers from real life, but alas, François's intern had thrown hers to the garbage before I could salvage them. The idea behing this illustration is to synthetize our worst fears: telling everyone we love antique, but secretly horrified of living in them because they are always falling apart, here a missing bead, there torn chiffon and the list goes on. The final result is a bit plain in the end, I think. I first called this painting “Surannée” because I love that word in the french language (could be translated as “old-world”, “old-fashioned”, even “musty” in some cases). As I was checking its correct spelling I even stumbled upon its outdated (ha-ha) spelling, and thought it would make for a lovely first name.

While I was away in the winterland side of the planet — yes, no matter the actual temperatures, yes, even 25°C/77°F — echoes of me got imprinted on other territories. For instance, see Pom's blog, she was gracious enough to let me do a bit of talking over there — it's really interesting 'cause you get to develop more your subject than in all the side notes I write about my illustrations when I post them here[1]. And of course, I'm completely indebted to Hana who took with her some of my prints and original artworks off to Nancy on her booth at Modern Doll Fest this weekend. However the only tracks I left of my presence in Peru would have to be mere money bills spent at local shops, mostly wool and all that I could take back home from Choco Museo, such as the cacao brew I'm sipping right now.

And while I'm grateful for the opportunity to lecture others, I have to confess that I'm well aware that this power is being over-abused on the internet by anyone and their mother, usually with inhuman ideals, which is why admittedly I am the first to mistrust any of these preaches so I won't mind if you don't take me seriously. Away with the tumblr text posts, there are other sources out there for interesting critiques which I encourage you to dig — as a local example, my friend's François Amoretti's “Les Destructeurs” fits much better the bill.
