The Last of the Mohicans.

English translation

Reader reader, today you're in for a treat: a book appreciation post. Let's get back to the end of august 2013, when I placed my first order on Book Depository in what would be a long list of posh and fancy editions, save for a couple ones. My basket featured an embroidered Emma (best idea for a book cover, not enough of them around), Wuthering Heights upon which much debate was internally held over two equally attractive editions, and finally The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Such was my first order, but since my latest also included The Beautiful and Damned, another Fitzgerald from the same collection, I thought it was the perfect occasion to dwelve upon that sub-aspect of my hipster book addiction, that is:

***THE SHINY BOOK***

When I finally put into practice that long love of intricate book designs, it changed a bit my habits, and for instance I could never buy again a softcover if it could be helped. I might be joking constantly about its frivolous aspect, but this choice rather makes sense actually, considering, well, that book cover and book illustration are dream jobs of mine. Also, while it might look like restrictive boundaries set upon the buying act, actually like much of my race I like having them around, plus I don't have enough time to read and don't make money fast enough as would make me get over my want-to-read list too soon with nothing left to look forward to. Book Depository often has discounts applied that combined with free shipping, have made many of these books no more expensive than a normal french hardcover, minus the usual ugliness.

In november same year, I was once more struck by the shining illness. That was a time for indulging in Gothic and by extension in Brontës, with the magnificent volume bound in leather of Jane Eyre that I later gave to posterity through one of my herbaria in less than 3 cm of height. As taking pictures at home is tremendously annoying due to the light conditions, I took a heavy bag of books with me all over town, and found the door handle of an abandoned school for young ladies for me to stick the book upon:

Well I can't only have classics and online purchases here can I? Silver was once more to be admired adorning that Four Tales by Philip Pullman, one of my favourite authors, a book I found shining by itself on the shelves of the best bookshop in Aix-en-Provence, the Book in Bar (i.e. the international bookshop of Aix ; what a surprise). Of course the book lived up to my expectations, including that requirement I have with every tale-teller: writing one's own stories and not feeling compelled to “revisit” centuries-old ones. A nod to the tradition, as in one of the tales, is much sufficient as far as I'm concerned. Four Tales was gifted at the craddle with plenty of illustrations by Peter Bailey, a bit on the sketch side, reminescent in that of the idyllic combination of Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake from my childhood memories. Pullman usually gets a more than fair treatment in the illustration department. The original covers of his acclaimed trilogy[1] have had great artistic influence on me at the time, and the companion short stories[2] were packed with plentiful of woodblock prints in case it wasn't good enough, which I found very in line with the chapter opening icons by Pullman himself of his chef-d'œuvre.

Magic word “Philip Pullman” functions just as well in the front or in the back of a book cover, as was the case with The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber for which he was quoted in enthusiastic commendation. In the same aforementioned bookshop was this book casting its light effects when it caught my attention in 2015. That Shiny Things Book indeed belongs to the science-fiction genre, without the futuristic coating. The main storyline is about a team of humans who are interacting with an intelligent specie on a very remote planet. We follow a minister that has been brought to the mission because the natives have expressed an immense interest in the Christian faith after being introduced to it: a radically straight-forward race, they claim their share of the miracle. As it is, the book explores the notion of distance through the new-to-us eyes of the oasians, but also in the long-distance relationship between the minister and his wife if not his planet, through a delayed and costly messenging system. Pretty cover declinations of this one have since been released for other editions.

My collection was still going strong when François Amoretti drew The Destroyers between 2014 and 2015. Coralie Bickford-Smith classics and my Jane Eyre were brought upon the desk to help design the cover, along with François' own Jean de Bonnot collection from his library. Subject to many a change from François' production team, the cover for The Destroyers shifted from toile to fake leather with gold gilding — considering the book was funded by its readers, some of them vegan, it would have been very undelicate indeed to get them actual leather after collecting their money I believe. This is the only comic book in this post, but believe me it is there on its own merit, considering the tone but also the obstination on François' part that it should be a pretty object. At Four Horsemen it is our most prized release!

Tales of the Peculiar: Once more, the gaza ladra syndrome occured at the Book in Bar which I was visiting hoping to find Ghost World. Well, they didn't carry it after all, and even though I had also a mind for new toiled Penguin classics, there was none there that interested me or that I hadn't already. This resulted in the money I was so sure to spend a way or another being actually available again. And this book shone. Shone. SHONE. I had no knowledge of the Particular universe upon buying this number, but I had marked the serie somewhere in my mind to read someday, as they released the Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children movie with Eva Green last year and many promotional images were in circulation back then. The inside of this book matches the inside! Tales are assembled together as if from various sources from everywhere in the world, and each short tale is introduced by a very detailed woodcut or linocut (not sure which), my weakness as everyone knows, as alluded to earlier regarding the two Northern Lights companion books. Like in Harry Potter, the Particulars universe is but a fantastic layer of supernatural above our own real world, so I enjoyed the feeling that this collection appeared just like if sourced from everywhere in the world. And for my french readers, there's even the agreeable and too rare a surprise that a french edition has been issued with the exact same design and materials.

That Folio Society edition of The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne found its way home after planning my future stay in London and concluding that I wouldn't have time to visit their bookshop. I've had my eyes on that one for quite some time now, and am especially fond of the way the illustration is handled over the front and the back, and most of all the spine. However I misunderstood the packshots, believing the book to be gold x black while in fact it was yellow x black with only the texts that were gilded. I haven't read it either, as I am currently on another Hawthorne, namely The Scarlet Letter that I have been meaning to read for ages but couldn't set on a pretty edition as I kind of dislike the Ruben Toledo one (I loved his Wuthering Heights though). So I'm reading it in a somewhat stylized edition, but still without the usual “wow”. While I'm at New England, I'm currently studying the case of The Last of the Mohicans, available both from Easton Press and Folio Society. Hmm… I don't have the money currently, buy my prints!

And as for War and Peace, an idea I stole from Rebecca, I found the perfect one from Jean de Bonnot, well, on a second-hand website as Jean de Bonnot currently doesn't have it in stock. Since I couldn't read it in its original language, I was stuck for a long time with a problem on my hands. For, while I knew of a gorgeous Barnes and Noble leatherbound edition for years, I couldn't get myself to read it in english and deemed french a much more appropriate language for a russian translation. Trouble is french editors are notoriously bad at cover design, they just don't care. My lucky day came while I was randomly browsing second-hand Jean de Bonnot on Internet. I hadn't thought about the stuff no longer released so there was much more titles to pick from than on their own website!

By the way, that's the method I used to finally find a decent Madame Bovary lately. Which coincidentally is both golden AND purple! I was set to wait for a rainy day to document it, for it's Madame Bovary from Rouen, not some Hussard on the roof from Provence.

Since I am editing this article to add the latest two acquisitions befitting this theme, on Saturday 24th, february 2018, let's not forget this luxury Bloomsbury edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone which I snatched at the Levens Harry Potter studios shop back in may 2017, upon a resolution to not buy any merchandize, however tempting the offer, other than books, save for a couple gifts for my loved ones. This image is a bit different from the others as I wanted its atmosphere to be true to the book serie, which I think the tartan from Stewart Christie, the Mary Queen of Scots wooden card from another Marie and the owl-blazoned plate handled over by my grand-mother to all of her grandchilds last Christmas, amply covered for.

I think this illustration pretty much sums up our worst nightmares as clothes curators[1]. The infortunate is none other than our poor Fraise, a character who sports such freckles as it becomes impossible for them not to brim over on her very own clothes. I often think about the contributions for our project, that's why I painted this piece. It will be used as a printed exlibris, but the original painting will be for sale as well as part of one of the more generous packs of the crowdfunding. It was displayed at the Masquerade Party, as a premiere. I hope that I improve my technique before I can officialy work on this book, since it's such a change from my ordinary scale!

I so so wish we had lauched the crowdfunding by october, as planned… Because we weren't ready back then, François and Nella had no choice but to revert to their own projects, both in crowdfunding as well. Crowdfunding, crowfunding… I fear that people that follow us might be under the impression that they are being over-sollicited… well, the 3 incriminated projects are supposedly rather different from one to another, so hopefully it won't be the same public otherwise it's hard to pick them all up (people don't envision <del>charities</del> artistic projects as they do pokemon, sadly). What concerns me quite a lot is that the first two projects to launch are more difficult to sell than Fraise Macaron and Arsenic (well I should hope so, it's a lolita book). I really hope it will work and that they won't suffer from the planning defficiencies! I'm not easy with the idea of having to sell all of your stock in only one month, one month 1/2 at best. That's why sharing is good for them, for those who can't do much more! I'll be coming back on Nella's portfolio for I will design the folder, and it would only do justice for not being able to display François's blog in my sidebar (a blog I webmaster myself ><) that I should write something a little more in-depth about Les Destructeurs (also, here's a reminder that this book will be available in british english language). Careful tho: some urban legend is going around that I should be systematically ruining François's work whenever I talk about it, apparently with a rather coarse language: Shaunarse, Fraise Macaron and Arse-nic, Four Arsemen… As the man says himself, such familiarity can only take place as we've been knowing each other for way too long… when he was still working on Burlesque Garce (don't you google-translate that).

Rho.)
