2017 almost went by without any new addition to my lolita herbaria serie (of which I'm only halfway through) but it would have been a shame indeed, although to be fair this herbarium was very nearly meant for January. But no, December is a better choice after all, as there was much to catch on this month's symbolism. For it is an important one at that, December, in my own mythology, a new year in an alternate universe, another very particular day… But it was also at this time of the year that for the first time I got to read the first book of the essential trilogy, Northern Lights[1] by Philip Pullman, after a very lucky Christmas which also saw none other than Lords of the Rings enter my library. And finally, december will be the month when I'll finally come back in this world(s) through fresh new pages (La Belle Sauvage) which are currently patiently awaiting by my bedside that a reading companion get their copy through the post. Anyway, far before that literary event came out of the Mists of Unlikely Miracles, in March or April I was already brushing the first hairs of a tribute herbarium (> fanart). So this nearly-surprise release — hell, I was never going to be prepared — ended up in me putting even more details related to the beloved book, up to the meticulous dusting of my illustration the night before.

I was aiming at finishing it on my birthday, but it didn't agree much with my travelling this day, and especially with my forgetting my lightbulb and my brush case… So instead I waited for Saint Lucy day, very fittingly with the northern spirit that inhabit this one. And I'm posting it the day after which is coincidentally the birthday of someone to whom I owe, if not Sweden, at least many other travels, two of which are already part of this herbarium, see for instance the Labrador tea leaves I got from La Palette Gourmande last year, and a lava stone from the Hekla volcano I brought back this summer from Iceland. Oh, by the way, I decided I would start icelandic posts before I'm done with Reunion island ones, so at least my lateness makes for a bit of diversity in this otherwise quite abandoned blog. Not that I'm bored with it, mind, only I travelled a lot this autumn-winter, so I wasn't much at home, if not the neighbourhood, both online and offline…

Sapphisme historique ? Yes, please.

This season was nonetheless rather productive in paintings, drawings and other crafts, but so few things reached the finished state! Well, at least this blog has many things to look forward to! As for my reading this autumn, a neverending summer in the South meant that I could never get in the mood for my shiny Harry Potter copy brought back from my England trip this May (and maybe it's for the best, considering what october had in store this year), so instead I turned to Sarah Waters with first Affinity (victorian spiritualism) then The Paying Guests (post-war twenties). Historical sapphism?

As to what's new, well I'm not sure yet, as I have said I have a lot of work in progress but I might as well start something new (many herbaria are slowly emerging from the primal soup of ideas at the moment), altough one thing is for certain, it is that this poor, poor website in development I sometimes tell you of, hasn't and won't be paid much attention in these times.

Relating my travel adventures here has been a sort of tradition, but admittedly I usually do it as the family's archivist, either in term of photos or diary logs, so that trip to the Reunion Island I want to tell you about is going to be a little bit special indeed. While it was a family trip all right, it wasn't my own, and while I was saved some expenses, my repaying the 1100€ (!) plane ticket is still underway ; and finally for the first time in a decade I was gone for a full month. That being said, as some days were more picturesque than others, you might be safe from neverending instalments of my report. Not so much from latin plant names as I'm perusing my naturalist book about Reunion.

Despite the ludicrous price of my flight, it still was as much of a crappy experience as all those before since the missed one from Greece 2015. The company made a change to the schedule which didn't agree much with Marseille airport notorious delays. It was so close to a complete disaster that half of the passengers that were to take the same connecting flight didn't make it. It appears that the crew took opposite decisions after they alphabetically split us up. One half, of which I was, could board the plane that we had been told “couldn't suffer any delay”, while the other were booked on the next plane. Our own party was separated actually.

We arrived with the rising sun and waited until we were finally all reunited, luggages included, to get in the cars and drive to the Tampon, a town the other side of the island. While I did snap pictures on the first days, first beaches, first pier, a month stay means I can be picky as to which pictures I should display here so let's fast-forward to october 4th, although not without a pang of regret as to having a discharged Nikon the day before when visiting the former house of my party, which had been abandoned after they left. Very urbex.

C'est mal me connaître.

On the 4th of october, too bad, I was ill. I woke up the day before with the harsh voice of a dude (call me Gérard, bro), but the new dawn apparently brought up fever and fatigue. Would it deter me from enjoying my vanilla duck and scouring the lava field with all my photographic gear? Uh, NO.
