With my Reunion island diaries on the hold but also a recently finished illustration at disposal, I've long hesitated about what to post first on my returning to blogging, after having been away quite some time this summer. But most of all it was my being late at commenting in other places that prolongated the wait for this place of my own, as I envision writing here and on other people's domains on the same level. Having finally caught up on that aspect, my mind feels free to return here at last. Under the influence of today's unexpected rain it seems like the perfect time to get back on the Reunion blogs, as the thought of this island immediately fills my mind with flashes of lush and green and humid landscapes… Don't worry, the illustration will be posted soon!

Entre-Deux

Autre jour, autre endroit.

Another day, another location. On the 11th of october we were headed towards a well preserved creole village named l'Entre-Deux. But first we made a halt on an impressive bridge from whereupon we watched one of the most typical birds of the Reunion, the phaeton.

The Entre-Deux village lies very near one of the first places members of our group used to live when they settled on the island at the end of the 1960s, after a transitory stay at the principal town Saint Denis. We located their former house on the opposite hill with my telescopic lens. At first they had neither water nor electricity, and after 2 years they moved to Saint Joseph in the — now decrepit — creole hut I showed you last time, for many a year until their departure back to metropolitan France.

Only two destinations for today so as to let you breathe a bit, although making choices amongst a month's worth of photos didn't prove as hard as expected considering I often visited the same places over and over again, especially the beaches where I would roll over ecstatically on the shells or go snorkeling in the shark-free lagoons (yet not lacking in other vicious beasts, lest we forget about the red lionfish or the stonefish).

Relating my travel adventures here has been a sort of tradition, but admittedly I usually do it as the family's archivist, either in term of photos or diary logs, so that trip to the Reunion Island I want to tell you about is going to be a little bit special indeed. While it was a family trip all right, it wasn't my own, and while I was saved some expenses, my repaying the 1100€ (!) plane ticket is still underway ; and finally for the first time in a decade I was gone for a full month. That being said, as some days were more picturesque than others, you might be safe from neverending instalments of my report. Not so much from latin plant names as I'm perusing my naturalist book about Reunion.

I still remember dearly my last stay on a tropical island… awww those were the days.

Despite the ludicrous price of my flight, it still was as much of a crappy experience as all those before since the missed one from Greece 2015. The company made a change to the schedule which didn't agree much with Marseille airport notorious delays. It was so close to a complete disaster that half of the passengers that were to take the same connecting flight didn't make it. It appears that the crew took opposite decisions after they alphabetically split us up. One half, of which I was, could board the plane that we had been told “couldn't suffer any delay”, while the other were booked on the next plane. Our own party was separated actually.

We arrived with the rising sun and waited until we were finally all reunited, luggages included, to get in the cars and drive to the Tampon, a town the other side of the island. While I did snap pictures on the first days, first beaches, first pier, a month stay means I can be picky as to which pictures I should display here so let's fast-forward to october 4th, although not without a pang of regret as to having a discharged Nikon the day before when visiting the former house of my party, which had been abandoned after they left. Very urbex.

Cap Ut

C'est mal me connaître.

On the 4th of october, too bad, I was ill. I woke up the day before with the harsh voice of a dude (call me Gérard, bro), but the new dawn apparently brought up fever and fatigue. Would it deter me from enjoying my vanilla duck and scouring the lava field with all my photographic gear? Uh, NO.

Well we are far advanced in colder weather now, yet with this new herbarium allow me to let you revive spring and summer, seasons that thrice saw me visiting Greece. The starting point for this herbarium lies much higher on the map, in the scottish folklore of selkies, or even higher still, where inuit people are sometimes being deceived by sea wives. But since the water flows easily, let's go back to Greece. For a little more than a year ago I rushed into painting the first element of this herbarium, when a bulb left unattended in a tea cup started blooming, several monthes after I had brought it back home (I thought it was some kind of onion really… yeah). So the selkie travels and gathers, sometimes from really remote places: this orange seashell was gifted to me by my mother after a trip to the Seychelles, although this might not be its true origin. Once the sea daffodil was painted, I left the herbarium to the completion pile, not to be touched again for several monthes while I'd figure out what I should do about it, that is to say not until the next spring. And just like the selkie I had travelled since…

I had intended one of my lolita herbaria to feature camisole and bloomer since I first started making them, using antique clothing rather than lolita brand underwear though, for labelling antique pieces “lolita” is perfectly legitimate with some of these pieces (from which Lolita draws its inspiration). This herbarium is very close to Rebecca's aquatic herbarium so I made sure it was connected only with salted waters. For instance, the yellow feather was gathered by me as it was floating on a beach on Serifos island. As I just have returned from another island, the Reunion, I doubt not that had I not already completed this painting I would have added some of the seashells I picked over there, such as my whitest cypraea nucleus that were soon deemed favorites from my perusings at Boucan Canot beach, and a few nameless little beaches along the road as well.

As for the news I was in Paris last week-end with a well-stuffed agenda to carry! An exposition on the Merovingian dynasty, The Handmaiden movie which did not disappoint being a Park Chan-Wook, a few restaurants, one peruvian (do you know of its reputation of being one of the finest cuisines in the world?) and two (mandatory) japanese. I also splurged big time at the Voriagh shop, being now the proud owner of the very last Mina bolero that had tempted me since its early versions… in the ebay shop. And a dress. And an umbrella named after the author of the last book I re-read. We also talked lots. I shared the little time I had between friends and family, though I couldn't contact everyone in such a hurry. I enjoyed both Paris and the countryside, hiking as usual in a forest and taking a stroll in Rambouillet Castle's HUGE park (I had forgotten how big it was, I should have known, as a young person I've often been tortured within its boundaries during the yearly and much dreaded “cross” in winter weather). Then I tested Machinarium which promises to be as awesome a game as Samorost 3 from the same studio so it might very well be my next game. #cutenotkawaii

This stay sure was much shorter than usual: I had to ditch another exposition (on medieval clothing but it's still going to be around next time I come so it's all right), and I only remained in the Jumanji pop-up bar for a couple minutes — I liked the setting and the cocktails sounded promising but the music was standard and not at all from the movie and it kind of repelled me. All in all I really feel like I've done a lot of differents things in a few days and it's just as well because the work I have to do now I'm back in Aix is going to be long and not as exciting as painting my own stuff. Well, at least, I can think about my next travels as it turns out this lucky wheel of unreasonableness is still spinning fast.

Holiday mode is still on as I'm editing my pictures in hope that this time it will be done in less than 150 years, same with accounting (fun times on excel!). I'm thinking about dropping downtown to seek my next herbarium main subject, maybe next week. Anyway, back before I flew to Peru I had a hole in my planning, a few days to fill in with a short illustration, so I grabbed my textured paper that I'm still not accustomed to work on, some paint as well — including my dried tea-filled half pan for all things brown — and here is the result, absolutely classical in every sense of the word. Because, first, it's a full-length portrait, the grey hair color is messalynian to the core (back from the days I used only pencils), the theme was developped from a previous illustration (Moth, of course). I had hoped to paint the dried flowers from real life, but alas, François's intern had thrown hers to the garbage before I could salvage them. The idea behing this illustration is to synthetize our worst fears: telling everyone we love antique, but secretly horrified of living in them because they are always falling apart, here a missing bead, there torn chiffon and the list goes on. The final result is a bit plain in the end, I think. I first called this painting “Surannée” because I love that word in the french language (could be translated as “old-world”, “old-fashioned”, even “musty” in some cases). As I was checking its correct spelling I even stumbled upon its outdated (ha-ha) spelling, and thought it would make for a lovely first name.

While I was away in the winterland side of the planet — yes, no matter the actual temperatures, yes, even 25°C/77°F — echoes of me got imprinted on other territories. For instance, see Pom's blog, she was gracious enough to let me do a bit of talking over there — it's really interesting 'cause you get to develop more your subject than in all the side notes I write about my illustrations when I post them here[1]. And of course, I'm completely indebted to Hana who took with her some of my prints and original artworks off to Nancy on her booth at Modern Doll Fest this weekend. However the only tracks I left of my presence in Peru would have to be mere money bills spent at local shops, mostly wool and all that I could take back home from Choco Museo, such as the cacao brew I'm sipping right now.

And while I'm grateful for the opportunity to lecture others, I have to confess that I'm well aware that this power is being over-abused on the internet by anyone and their mother, usually with inhuman ideals, which is why admittedly I am the first to mistrust any of these preaches so I won't mind if you don't take me seriously. Away with the tumblr text posts, there are other sources out there for interesting critiques which I encourage you to dig — as a local example, my friend's François Amoretti's “Les Destructeurs” fits much better the bill.

So, absolutely not in chronological order, I present thee with the first illustration from my herbarium serie, this is the piece with which it started back in summer. That made me realise that it wouldn't be possible to paint fresh flowers from life — once cut, you know. The one from the illustration kept itself up long enough for me to draw the upper part. Luckily for me, the pine cones are far less complicated.

This illustration is all about references to places I wandered last august. One of its goal is also to keep me from painting blueberry bushes by containing this irreasonable urge into a mere fabric pattern on a blouse. You will find also, and it's not limited to it, axes femmes-inspired boots and real blueberries such as the one we cooked into a pie that evening where we also had a cep risotto… delicious blueberries, reminding me of other ones.

My internet backlog is getting bigger and bigger… I can't stay up to date with blogs, neither mine nor others, do all the stuff I'm supposed to do (RDRR, setting a friend's wordpress), doing my share of communication about our team's projects at Four Horsemen… even worse, I missed poupéegirl yesterday like every month since they installed that crappy internet box. Aarg >_< Speaking of delay, egl finally changed its theme using the illustration I submitted for november, isn't that cool?

It's even better offline: today, I am wearing the brown Innocent World bolero that François and Nella got me for my birthday. And instead of a loliday we had a loliweek-end, for Marianne, a lolita from Québec who is currently backpacking all through Europe, was amongst us. She'll have to keep a travel log and share it some day! On saturday we took her to a typical Provence town: Gordes. We were ashamed of the weather but the sun finally managed to pierce the clouds at the end of the day so we could enjoy the renowned viewpoint on the village. Then on Sunday, we geared up in frills and wandered in Aix, under a big bright blue sky (finally!) We ended up in a café who does an awesome patisserie that tastes like calisson (the local specialty) and apricot. A jolly good week-end that was, how the introvert in me enjoy such intimate meet-ups!
