On behalf of my artistic practice, I've paid attention to the notion of signature quite early on, and follow the same rituals ever since my teens. Unavoidable digression: who are those people with GIANT signatures on the front of their work and why??? While I deem it quite important to provide context to your creations, there's no need for it to be on the frontline, whether that's a big scribble or your gilded embossed megagiant flourished monogram for that matter. I'm equally fine with visually hiding such things in the picture, loosing them underneath the frame mat or just having them on the back. End of digression. What I meant was that even blogging has had me develop a signature of sorts, which has nothing to do with style, but rather with the frequency of my posts. An uninteresting detail to the overlooker but to me, it has been invaluable in providing a few milestones I'm loath to miss, or at the very least never doing so without a little dose of regret. But that's a good thing! I've done too many abandoned blog urbex to not have vowed to not be that person. Let's rewind back to 2017 (Digression n°2: for those of you distressed by the current times, I've found a way to time travel to just a few months back, however I cannot guarantee that those were rosier times)[1].

This post is quite the lengthy one, so I've planned a few quick links to its various parts to be read in multiple installments if you feel like it. As far as I'm concerned, this serie has overspent its time by *several months* to still be on the current post list for *just the one trip*, so I've bundled up all I could in this one finale.

Time to dwelve into another escapade from the main road, though not as dramatic as— you know the one. There aren't so many crossroads in Iceland for the general public equipped with normal cars, as usually the circular road on the coasts of the country is the fastest option available for long distances. Yet once we reached the (central point of the) far east, the next stop was for once a lake region in the back country, where we were to join the swarms of touris-- of midges of Mývatn. So we turned north-west, soon reaching our next lodgings at probably 300€ a night or something in what is alas typical icelandic style.

The main local attraction are the dimmuborgirs, those weird and tall lava miniature mountains.
Fin

To be honest, writing blog posts hasn't been very high on my priority list since february, because that's when I got myself A NEW LAPTOP which has apparently set free my ever strong gaming dispositions (I'm still writing this post from the old compie with Samorost 2, a browser flash game from 2005 playing in the background but oh well). No but think of it! Characters running smoothly! Loading screens that take seconds not minutes! It's a whole new world so cut me some slack, I have a decade of bug and lag to make up for (I've been playing under the minimal specs for years now with some games, and while it's doable, the price is high mind you). Migrating from one system to another is going to require some additional steps though — I have only half my former disk space and since I'm not going back to external drives ever, and found I couldn't just swap them between my two laptops I believe some shopping is in order. Also I think I'm going to get another, sturdier charger from a guy I found who repairs and reinforce them properly, a life hack I wish I'd known sooner.

Now I'm not saying I gave up on illustration, far from it, but what I left behind me last year was really messy so progress is extra slow. Regrets IV: attempting to get back to large pieces when my small home work desk is not up to the task, doesn't do much good for my back.

After such a memorable moment as was described in my latest blog post on the subject, nearly a year ago, I entertained some hopes that I could get to a closure with the travel logs in one last round, however, with about a week more of adventures and tons of photographs, I've come to terms with the fact that it is preposterous at best. To further delay matters, I also figured out I'd better make the subsequent travels photos top priority as my new camera is creating RAW files twice to thrice as heavy as my former Nikon and the space on my hard-drive is becoming scarce. Last season recap: we were setting camp on a traffic roundabout in an industrial zone after a car incident worth about five years of my income (two sad points were being made in the last sentence, can you spot them?).

This blog will cover the last 3 days in august, getting back on our island tour after a 400km x 2 (oh yeah) setback of having to deal with the car in the capital city.
(…À moins que ?) / (…Unless?)

I now see very well how the unrealness of those moments captured in film wasn't only a result of our financial torment (to say nothing about this roll older than I), and while those freezing landscapes could do nothing to relieve us from the chilling aftermath of having been stripped bare by the car rental folks, my mind feels somehow alleviated from having at long least shared the (picture) load in the setting I always intended them for, in spite of the 2 years wait and in such a remote and desolate corner of the internets (the irony isn't lost to whom once used the affectionate nickname of dungeon for this blog's personal companion). I suspect my social media accounts are beyond saving anyway, so this is where *I* am happening now, þitches.

When it comes to volcanic fields, ever since 2013 I compare everything to my beloved Yellowstone (I enjoy my geological disaster assorted with a couple prairie bisons and lightning-struck pines). Although this place seems indeed like a mock-up in size to the famous super-volcano, it was with great pleasure that I saw there some familiar textures, bread crumbs as I would call them back then.

Is it quite rare for me to travel abroad without keeping a diary I can rely upon later on when I'm writing a blog post serie. And yet, that did somehow happened with Iceland so it doesn't really matter whether I'm penning this two or sixteen months upon my return. However, there has been one very particular day, extending into the following two, which took me the remainder of our stay to relate in a tiny notebook leaving me no time for anything else really, a sort of a time bubble which I dubbed ‘The Lakagígar Situation’ after the Pulp Fiction movie post-Marvin sequence. The turning point between July and August has traditionally been an odd moment here, I even had a poupéegirl outfit for it, mind you. That year, the iconic 31th began in the icelandic bush, in a well-named refuge, under a setting sun we should never have witnessed as this time of the year it occurs in the middle of the night.

But let's get back in time. At the end of july 29th we installed our tents in a campsite named Þakgil that can be found in the town of Vík, thus defeating a rather jumpy fool of a kitten, which tried and tried again to prevent the deed. Upon the next morning, instead of heading East, we went back on our tracks a little to do some bird-sighting, specifically puffins, at the site of Dyrhólaey before it gets crowded (by Non-Puffins).

The afternoon was dedicated to exploring Lakagígar, an area usually described as ‘exceptional’ which got our attention and seemed feasible enough as far as my guidebook was concerned so as to induce us to make a detour from the otherwise quite predictable circular road. We knew the road wouldn't be ideal but we had a taste of it when approaching the Hekla volcano and it promised to be just as manageable.

Joie simple.

And there you have it. Peak Iceland. What an otherwordly experience. What a dream sequence *the soundtrack of a very disturbing Lynch movie quietly starts playing in the background*. No, no, wait. Now, before we move forward, let's take another minute to appreciate one last time the puffins we saw earlier on the morning. Funny little guys they are, the puffins. Simple joy.

So… what happened between these two pictures? An incredible 10-minutes-long video unintentionally recorded, an icy river and a car stuck right in the middle (please note that this was by no means our first crossing of the day), unhelpful tourists capturing the scene on their fucking phones, helpful fellow french such as that one who was unafraid to wet the shirt — literally — trying to push the car with us, or that group that managed to dislodge it from the river thanks to their massive jeep and the strong webbings they were carrying around.

Luggages removed, a car that won't start over as would be explained later by the terrible combination of an electronic system located in the floor (that's textbook unhelpful SUV for you) and a massive hole in the undercarriage which we instantly correlated with a very disturbing sound heard while driving as the sport mode of the car suddenly produced an ill-timed acceleration on a very rocky road.

Rangers waiting with us, driving us to a refuge 15 min from there, a scientific group arriving in the refuge, a sweet repairman with long eyelashes and a probably misplaced trust in junk food arriving past midnight, the path to the car wiped off our memories now the sun has set and what with the place bring an expert-level maze, a hostile road that's a little bit too much for the repairman equipment who will end up abandoning the car behind in the middle of nowhere, a campsite entered at 4:30am.

The wait for the retrieval of the car, a forced return to Reykvavik at a most prohibitive cost with the former repairman's brother who had an even shorter sleep than his brother — one hour —, a late night arrival in a shady car agency insisting that a provision corresponding to the maximum amount for eventual damages be paid before midnight (that so-called icelandic way is likely a scam, fiy), a car model that ends up being far more expensive than the one we rented, an unrequited ‘upgrade‘ of tragic consequences, savings gone, credit cards tried one after another with increasingly smaller amounts to no avail as the cost of the towing alone had probably triggered an alert with the bank, a last paiement successfully proceeded at 11:59pm, no way to rent another car because we cannot provide a caution after having been completely ripped off, and that's how you end up camping on the next available roundabout.

Epilogue: months later, receiving a refund for a fraction of the provision we had supplied, with a detailed bill that show clearly how they replaced everything they could on this car, notably unharmed pieces like the seats. How convenient.

At that point we had to consider whether to keep the trip going on or not after such an indecent sum was thrown away by the window. Arguments in favour were the considerable lack of available holidays for some of our party meaning time is of even more value than the money here, and a rather thrifty lifestyle with some financial margins for emergency crisis. And ultimately, giving up on already paid reservations, having to purchase another plane tickets maybe? Wasn't worth it, so we did indeed stay until the end. Pffeeew. Not that this rather… emotional post is… evacuated, I vow to come back with more amazeball photos on the rest of our trip! Might be easier now. But to end on a less bitter note, I have compiled a few links lately but not enough for a full post so I'm just dropping them here:

It's been a mere week that my current area of residency has been under temperatures worthy of an icelandic heatwave. I mean, autumn has come. This post is packed to the brim with photos, yet it only covers but a day of our trip. That's the spirit, Iceland!

Keldur

Beginning of our round trip around Iceland by the east. First halt on this July 29th saw us entering the tiny village of Keldur to feast our eyes upon the wonderous display of (a handful of) ancient houses with moss-covered rooftops. Although we couldn't linger too long on the site due to many other visits for the day, the sight from the outside had much to offer as you will see in the following pictures. Books often allude to the viking roots of this place but truly, its charm is more of a feral nature, say maybe with a touch of Village d'antan at best rather than fog and foghorns as promised by some tv shows.

Our latest stop (to our knowledge, but more on that later) was right on point with the day's water theme. For I was about to finally gaze upon icebergs (so this word might not mean anything to you if you're reading this from a web archival database, but in these times it used to designate large chunks of ice floating around in the least tropical parts of the globe).

As we were about to leave, we noticed a trail of people walking towards the ocean. Could as well be some extra icebergs in the sea, or perhaps a seal colony (it's not seen in my pictures but a seal was fooling around the icebergs). So we set out on the path, hoping for a streak of luck like in 2011 when in Osaka we followed a crowd dressed in more yukatas than usual, only to find a nice spot by the river where everybody had gathered to watch the summer fireworks. However the flat landscape was treacherous and an hour walking with no idea about the destination nor the remaining distance was starting to weigh upon our moral.

Oskúrlafaktur Part I : Le Cercle d'Orurn:md5:6ea76527a6881933431a51e7090f408f2018-01-04T21:40:00+01:002018-01-04T22:23:32+01:00messalynUnderbara ResaargentiqueCanon AV-1expired filmExpéditionsGolden CircleIslandeLightroomNikon D60ReykjavíkVSCO FILM® 05

Well well well, isn't it just the time to dwelve into (some of) the Iceland memories and share? Does it even need a real intro?

Since the trip to Peru I became obsessed with photo filters that reproduce the feel of authentic analog films, but since I now travel with an analog camera in its own right, I guess I can just post them simultaneously, both series blending perfectly. Well, maybe not so well, considering the film I used that time was really, really old. But some of them turned out to be good stuff, despite the high rate of failed ones.

I didn't take much pictures in town. We enjoyed the local architecture with many houses covered in corrugated metal, visited the cathedral which won't remain with me as an imperishable memory, and ordered assortments of icelandic specialties at the Café Loki everybody seem to be visiting when visiting Reykjavík. And lo-and-behold, despite proclaiming more than once that I would stay away from their infamous fermented shark, I'll be damned if the second I took notice of it in one of the plates I didn't order it. It's just so hard for me resisting whatever is the strangest thing on a menu. The only time I remember being able to say no is to guinea pig, a blessing for both parties I suppose.

Le Cercle d'Or

The next day we toured the Golden Circle, the most popular area of the country. One day is enough to make the most of it, and there are waterfalls, geological point of interest, Game of Thrones filming locations and geysers to be seen. Not to mention the hot springs we did at the end of day, having conveniently chosen lodgings the other side of the road so we could enjoy it until the closure, hoping for late as anyway there is hardly any night this time of the year. Secret Lagoon. Far more intimate than the iconic Blue Lagoon, far less blue also but with small geysers as a bónus!

So this is like the perfect start of a new serie of travel blog posts, not overcrowded as it is. Remember, I still have another ongoing but I could never make up my mind regarding mixing analog and the digital photos which has delayed everything, and furthermore most posts also require some botanical research so it's kind of very slow, but I'll get there. Iceland will be easier to write about.
