After such a memorable moment as was described in my latest blog post on the subject, nearly a year ago, I entertained some hopes that I could get to a closure with the travel logs in one last round, however, with about a week more of adventures and tons of photographs, I've come to terms with the fact that it is preposterous at best. To further delay matters, I also figured out I'd better make the subsequent travels photos top priority as my new camera is creating RAW files twice to thrice as heavy as my former Nikon and the space on my hard-drive is becoming scarce. Last season recap: we were setting camp on a traffic roundabout in an industrial zone after a car incident worth about five years of my income (two sad points were being made in the last sentence, can you spot them?).

This blog will cover the last 3 days in august, getting back on our island tour after a 400km x 2 (oh yeah) setback of having to deal with the car in the capital city. However as you will discover in the rest of this entry, in this country 3 days are more than enough to taste both ice and fire…

(…À moins que ?) / (…Unless?)

I now see very well how the unrealness of those moments captured in film wasn't only a result of our financial torment (to say nothing about this roll older than I), and while those freezing landscapes could do nothing to relieve us from the chilling aftermath of having been stripped bare by the car rental folks, my mind feels somehow alleviated from having at long least shared the (picture) load in the setting I always intended them for, in spite of the 2 years wait and in such a remote and desolate corner of the internets (the irony isn't lost to whom once used the affectionate nickname of dungeon for this blog's personal companion). I suspect my social media accounts are beyond saving anyway, so this is where *I* am happening now, þitches.

When it comes to volcanic fields, ever since 2013 I compare everything to my beloved Yellowstone (I enjoy my geological disaster assorted with a couple prairie bisons and lightning-struck pines). Although this place seems indeed like a mock-up in size to the famous super-volcano, it was with great pleasure that I saw there some familiar textures, bread crumbs as I would call them back then.

This blog post was originally published missing both a good chunk of formatting and the present english translation, but I had to hurry as I was leaving on the next Wednesday on the first stop of a long travel out of town, to fire porcelains before a Christmas market, the details of which can be found in the next post.

Is it quite rare for me to travel abroad without keeping a diary I can rely upon later on when I'm writing a blog post serie. And yet, that did somehow happened with Iceland so it doesn't really matter whether I'm penning this two or sixteen months upon my return. However, there has been one very particular day, extending into the following two, which took me the remainder of our stay to relate in a tiny notebook leaving me no time for anything else really, a sort of a time bubble which I dubbed ‘The Lakagígar Situation’ after the Pulp Fiction movie post-Marvin sequence. The turning point between July and August has traditionally been an odd moment here, I even had a poupéegirl outfit for it, mind you. That year, the iconic 31th began in the icelandic bush, in a well-named refuge, under a setting sun we should never have witnessed as this time of the year it occurs in the middle of the night.

But let's get back in time. At the end of july 29th we installed our tents in a campsite named Þakgil that can be found in the town of Vík, thus defeating a rather jumpy fool of a kitten, which tried and tried again to prevent the deed. Upon the next morning, instead of heading East, we went back on our tracks a little to do some bird-sighting, specifically puffins, at the site of Dyrhólaey before it gets crowded (by Non-Puffins).

The afternoon was dedicated to exploring Lakagígar, an area usually described as ‘exceptional’ which got our attention and seemed feasible enough as far as my guidebook was concerned so as to induce us to make a detour from the otherwise quite predictable circular road. We knew the road wouldn't be ideal but we had a taste of it when approaching the Hekla volcano and it promised to be just as manageable.

Joie simple.

And there you have it. Peak Iceland. What an otherwordly experience. What a dream sequence *the soundtrack of a very disturbing Lynch movie quietly starts playing in the background*. No, no, wait. Now, before we move forward, let's take another minute to appreciate one last time the puffins we saw earlier on the morning. Funny little guys they are, the puffins. Simple joy.

So… what happened between these two pictures? An incredible 10-minutes-long video unintentionally recorded, an icy river and a car stuck right in the middle (please note that this was by no means our first crossing of the day), unhelpful tourists capturing the scene on their fucking phones, helpful fellow french such as that one who was unafraid to wet the shirt — literally — trying to push the car with us, or that group that managed to dislodge it from the river thanks to their massive jeep and the strong webbings they were carrying around.

Luggages removed, a car that won't start over as would be explained later by the terrible combination of an electronic system located in the floor (that's textbook unhelpful SUV for you) and a massive hole in the undercarriage which we instantly correlated with a very disturbing sound heard while driving as the sport mode of the car suddenly produced an ill-timed acceleration on a very rocky road.

Rangers waiting with us, driving us to a refuge 15 min from there, a scientific group arriving in the refuge, a sweet repairman with long eyelashes and a probably misplaced trust in junk food arriving past midnight, the path to the car wiped off our memories now the sun has set and what with the place bring an expert-level maze, a hostile road that's a little bit too much for the repairman equipment who will end up abandoning the car behind in the middle of nowhere, a campsite entered at 4:30am.

The wait for the retrieval of the car, a forced return to Reykvavik at a most prohibitive cost with the former repairman's brother who had an even shorter sleep than his brother — one hour —, a late night arrival in a shady car agency insisting that a provision corresponding to the maximum amount for eventual damages be paid before midnight (that so-called icelandic way is likely a scam, fiy), a car model that ends up being far more expensive than the one we rented, an unrequited ‘upgrade‘ of tragic consequences, savings gone, credit cards tried one after another with increasingly smaller amounts to no avail as the cost of the towing alone had probably triggered an alert with the bank, a last paiement successfully proceeded at 11:59pm, no way to rent another car because we cannot provide a caution after having been completely ripped off, and that's how you end up camping on the next available roundabout.

Epilogue: months later, receiving a refund for a fraction of the provision we had supplied, with a detailed bill that show clearly how they replaced everything they could on this car, notably unharmed pieces like the seats. How convenient.

At that point we had to consider whether to keep the trip going on or not after such an indecent sum was thrown away by the window. Arguments in favour were the considerable lack of available holidays for some of our party meaning time is of even more value than the money here, and a rather thrifty lifestyle with some financial margins for emergency crisis. And ultimately, giving up on already paid reservations, having to purchase another plane tickets maybe? Wasn't worth it, so we did indeed stay until the end. Pffeeew. Not that this rather… emotional post is… evacuated, I vow to come back with more amazeball photos on the rest of our trip! Might be easier now. But to end on a less bitter note, I have compiled a few links lately but not enough for a full post so I'm just dropping them here:

This fourth post in my Reunion serie is a bit pulled together at the last minute as I've a whole film roll to show you, following my acquisition of a Canon AV-1 a couple months before this trip, and a last photo serie in a fascinating place I was dying to show you from the day I started these posts! Instead of writing inbetween pictures because the period covered is too long (and also because I forgot my travel notebook at my atelier apparently), I captioned all the photos.

Quickly upon arriving in the island, I found some locally produced tea for breakfast in the shop of some place we visited. Locally-produced tea: french tea? Now that's unheard of. I have always wanted to visit a tea plantation, especially when visiting Japan, but an expedition in some remote japanese countryside always felt too hardcore for me. Thus I had to take advantage of this unique occasion, even more so indeed as Labyrinthe En-Champ-Thé has its very own ways to do business: for starters, it's built on the remains of a previous plantation that had to stop production a few decades ago, due to the competition of countries with ridiculously low wages, and because its quality couldn't overcome its confidentiality. All of this resulting into various generations of trees, the latest having been sowed as a maze, as the name induces. As for the eldest, they have reached their full adult size which is a bit of a rareity as usually they are kept small so workers can pick up the leaves.

I know fully well nobody really care for these particular blog posts — or maybe it's the whole blog — but Reunion is still well into my mind, no less because I plan to go back this year despite my terrible finances. Family duty! (That's only half a joke though.)

I'm not sure what happened this year because I certainly didn't expected to take a full year to write my reports about Reunion Island…! I experienced this for Yellowstone, but certainly not before the 3rd post and I seem to recall my photo-retouching methods were far more tedious back then. By the way, I recently rearranged my old travel posts to make them prettier, just in case. (Actually the whole blog is concerned by a cosmetic rearrangement).

If the heavy mist from my last visit had from an esthete's point of view been most satisfactory, as a point of view on its own it has undeniably failed miserably, so I hoped to try my luck once more. I didn't met resistance on the weather's part, but the volcano itself was another matter. Let's say I could observe from afar, but the volcano trails were closed as an eruption was ongoing, which is muss less exciting than it sounds as it didn't result in any phenomenon, lava, nothing of the sort really…

The remainer of the day saw us visit the Volcano Museum, not the largest but a pleasant one, with a collection of minerals, a funny eruption simulator, an awkward moment with a 4D movie probably more aimed at kids than the adult to elederly people audience that watched it with us… However the museum tired me a bit so I have no memory whatsoever of the road to Notre-Dame de la Paix forest, where we pulled over so I could nap a bit but ended up going out of the car and engaging on a trail:

We had previously driven to this garden only to find it closed, so on the 16th we made sure the date was right and we could enter at the opening. I liked it there and got myself a nice supply of locally-coloured teas from the shop (think orchid, geranium, lantana…), as well as a book on fishes to help keep a mental record on the fishes I saw on beach days, such as I couldn't relate on this diary as the camera was safe home on these occasions. These gardens were more structured than the Garden of Perfumes and Spices (the name is a dead giveaway), which is to be expected from a research center, I guess.

Relating my travel adventures here has been a sort of tradition, but admittedly I usually do it as the family's archivist, either in term of photos or diary logs, so that trip to the Reunion Island I want to tell you about is going to be a little bit special indeed. While it was a family trip all right, it wasn't my own, and while I was saved some expenses, my repaying the 1100€ (!) plane ticket is still underway ; and finally for the first time in a decade I was gone for a full month. That being said, as some days were more picturesque than others, you might be safe from neverending instalments of my report. Not so much from latin plant names as I'm perusing my naturalist book about Reunion.

Despite the ludicrous price of my flight, it still was as much of a crappy experience as all those before since the missed one from Greece 2015. The company made a change to the schedule which didn't agree much with Marseille airport notorious delays. It was so close to a complete disaster that half of the passengers that were to take the same connecting flight didn't make it. It appears that the crew took opposite decisions after they alphabetically split us up. One half, of which I was, could board the plane that we had been told “couldn't suffer any delay”, while the other were booked on the next plane. Our own party was separated actually.

We arrived with the rising sun and waited until we were finally all reunited, luggages included, to get in the cars and drive to the Tampon, a town the other side of the island. While I did snap pictures on the first days, first beaches, first pier, a month stay means I can be picky as to which pictures I should display here so let's fast-forward to october 4th, although not without a pang of regret as to having a discharged Nikon the day before when visiting the former house of my party, which had been abandoned after they left. Very urbex.

Cap Ut

C'est mal me connaître.

On the 4th of october, too bad, I was ill. I woke up the day before with the harsh voice of a dude (call me Gérard, bro), but the new dawn apparently brought up fever and fatigue. Would it deter me from enjoying my vanilla duck and scouring the lava field with all my photographic gear? Uh, NO.
