So here we are in 2018 and it's spring and there hasn't been a single content here dated from the current year! Travel posts will follow but I'd rather space them out as my artistic production should remain the main focus of my blog otherwise things start to feel unbalanced which in turn messes up my relation to this place and the many others where I'm active. Although, to be fair, that relationship is not exactly perfect in the first place when it comes to people I know less or not at all because as often as I hear people lament the decrease in engagement here and there, I've also been received quite a few times with silence and general uninterest for comments I took what seemed like forever to write, probably because I ignore the web etiquette of sticking to emojis[1]. <gratuitous cynism>Sure enough, comments aren't income so as long as there won't be an “Empty Pockets” badge to display in our bios for community managers and spammers to filter us off, I'm bound to deceive a lot of people isn't it?
Anyway, aren't comments just a tool to customize algorythms nowadays? Who cares for their content?</gratuitous cynism>

Still, the main reason behind my recent shutdown is my conscience which has pushed me to get back, at least for a time, to the biggest project in my to-do list. Those who know me are aware of how I get going in life, but for the others, I'm living off borrowed time, from my after-studies break to be precise. A time dedicated to honeying skills in fields I identify more as my real career path as opposed to my studies, although “opposed” is not the best choice of words as I'd say they're complementary. Yet that time stretched out way more than I ever envisioned and became a mess of personal projects (potentially (haha) marketable) and unsufficiently paid stuff. Now, while the freelance must learn to balance their various clients plannings, the last remaining project of my list, so painstakingly challenging for my limited skills, a sinuous path from one problem to the next, doesn't allow much in the way of a predictable deadline. I'm convinced I need to shake it off (in most parts) to even start to consider the future. Yet despite being of the exausting sort, it is dear to me nonetheless for a number of reasons.

A remarkable feat of my few painting breakaways of these first few months of 2018 is that none was exactly a solitary project, which did good I guess for my state of mind induced by that prolongated time allowed to my website project… Not all are for the public eyes right now but I can show you the art swaps.

The first of these swaps was arranged with Kreestal whose personal blog[2] might very well be my favorite site right now (too easy with poo-pee gone…). There was quite a handful of themes available for this exchange as our universes overlap frequently. I just as well found useful webdev tips in her blog than my fix of breton pics. Anyway, the one thing we agreed upon was that we had to craft something. Not like I could ever dismiss that part in any swap I was ever a part of lest I should feel horribly guilty about it…

I wasn't victim of a trickery either! I'm not going to expose the whole of my package (especially since at 3am I didn't think of taking a picture), but the devil is in the details and for instance, the mere plant list from the tea she sent me looks like it was taken straight from my head based on landscapes that are part of me. Also, the unusual wooden card of Mary Queen of Scots found its way later in an addendum to my Shiny Books blog post. And so atop of these two paragraphs you can see the illustration Kreestal made for me and which sits now on the top of my desk as would the moon if said desk was in front of a window rather than the bottom of the cave.

As to the artwork I sent, let's say it wasn't a particularly mind-boggling choice of subject, I think it might have taken me a couple of seconds to figure. Following a missed hint in a previous illustration I unequivocally struck back with a hand-painted card of her cat:

The picture is seemingly upside-down as a nod to an era in my life where everything on my walls were presented as such, january 2018

For the second swap, which almost was the first, before it was seemingly abandoned, then resurrected, of which ruleset I never was made aware of nor did I really knew who exactly was involved[4], my swappee was Clafoutea. As both my swaps unexpectedly turned up at the same time, the content of one creeped in the other: finishing my illustration for Clafou was the key to be granting myself the right to open Kreestal's parcel but let's face it, could I resist using immediately the strange golden powder she sent me? Of course not. The subject is just as straightforward as the last. I'm a bit fascinated, if not confused, by the trend on Instagram (and probably everywhere else) of spontaneously sending people (usually well-dressed people) portraits of them. The idea must have crossed my mind once or twice (meant to do that for people who are not used to be a subject of consideration), but of course I cannot allow myself to do that really, considering the sheer number of non-profit projects I already have on my plate[5]. I took it as my best opportunity for this kind of work, and I even have a couple progress shots:

We stayed a little longer than usual at the Mistaya canyon to snap some perillous pictures, then on the advice of a rogue sign, 3 of us walked to a belvedere that wasn't nearby at all (and considering the annoyed manual inscriptions on the intermediate signs, we weren't the first to have been fooled by the lack of mileage!). After a quarter of an hour we walked back to the rest of our party who must have wondered where we were.

(On allait repartir).

A little while after we stopped again on the road in a area that happened to be a camping site. Only as soon as we had parked the car we noticed that in other cars nearby people were weaving at us… yup, there was a bear only a few meters away, giving a rough time to the bushes. Remember how only the previous day we had been so irritated by the careless tourist that did the same thing — well, consciously, alas. If it wasn't for the other folks I don't think we would have noticed! (We were about to leave).

I had had a mind to try the tea house but the place was absolutely crowded and worse still, it wasn't at all the neat and cosy place the name induced me to think it was as far as the menu was concerned. On the way back, we split in two groups as my father and uncle wanted to go see lake Agnès. Me and my siblings intended to get back to town with a shuttle but it turned out that none went where we were headed, so in spite of our sore feets, we walked back to our lodgings through a trail in the forest, a really easy hike, which made me expect to stumble upon many families but we barely met a soul. Glacier -> home on foot only!

Who pooped in da pool? Who? Who? Who? Who?

A little bit later in the day, despite being utterly tired and very close to napping we managed to find enough motivation to go swimming. But at the moment when I was about to open the door, my father and uncle knocked to inform us of a grave news: Who pooped in the pool? Who? Who? Who? Who? No kidding, we went to make sure and there was yellow tape and all, crime scene-style. Lucky they didn't give any names because I would have that little piece of shit drink his own masterpiece.
